These days I'm more worried about everyone getting through the day alive versus havin...

In a prior life as a CTO, when you asked one of the best engineers on my team if he could build something, his typical answer was “it’s just typing.” He knew what to do; it just took time. But is that what he should be doing? Now as a VC, I help early-stage startups create their version of the f...  ...Read more

It’s easy to come up with a hundred names for your product, but how do you pick the right one? Most naming guides attribute the decision making process to instinct or a loose framework. However a key component tends to be missing from the process — user or customer validation. While there’s no...  ...Read more

Better Persuasion Through Acceptance I was at a sales seminar about a year ago, when I heard a piece of advice so stereotypically salesy that I nearly did a spit-take: “you can’t be willing to take ‘no’ for an answer”. Sure it was actually not that candidly said, but distilled down, that was c...  ...Read more

Can you pull this off? I was VP of marketing at Ardent, a supercomputer company where a year earlier I had a painful and permanent lesson about Customer Discovery. I was smart, aggressive, young and a very tactical marketer who really hadn’t a clue about what strategy actually meant. One da...  ...Read more

Most of the startup founders are techies. Why? Because for a non-tech founder, the startup world appears way harder to conquer. Startups take birth and die. 1000s of them. Every single day. Techie or non-techie? Doesn’t matter. It’s hard to say for sure what is it really that makes some suc...  ...Read more

Building a user base is the most fundamental and frustrating aspect of building a successful company. It’s a major topic of conversation for almost every founder I talk with.
